Former Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton is grateful to be alive after surviving a life-threatening bout of pneumonia last fall. “I am blessed to be here because there was a time when they were about to put me on life support,” Mary Lou, 55, told Today ’s Hoda Kotb on January 8. The devastating illness came on quickly. “I didn’t know what was wrong with me,” Mary Lou said, recalling how she lay on her bedroom floor struggling to breathe.

Now and then, the US Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, pops up in the news for drama. On the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight,” the host, John Oliver, opened with a monologue roasting the speaker for several reasons.  In fact, since his appointment in October, a lot has been revealed about him. These include his anti-LGBTQ+ beliefs and his alleged involvement in trying to overturn the 2020 elections.

In the days before VHS — which were in the days before DVDs, which were before Blu-rays, which were before streaming — your only hope for re-watching a movie that you loved was when it made its TV debut, or the studios would re-release them on the big screen (oftentimes as part of some pretty bizarre double features — The Odd Couple paired with Rosemary’s Baby immediately comes to mind). Unfortunately, all of those technologies listed above more or less did away with the idea of re-releases, although for a number of years, Fathom Events has been doing something about it.

Reality TV changed the life of Stuart resident Tiffany Copeland. Born in Jupiter Farms, Copeland fell in love with manatees while kayaking and canoeing on our local waterways. From an early age, she wanted to protect the aquatic mammals, later studying their lives more closely at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio. “I have had a lifelong passion for manatee rescue and conservation,” says Copeland, 35, who was third stewardess on season one (2016) of Bravo’s popular reality show Below Deck Mediterranean.
